Air traffic controllers manage the flow of aircraft through controlled airspace and on the ground. It is a high-stakes career requiring intense focus, rapid decision-making, and exceptional communication skills.
Job Outlook and Salary
The median annual salary for air traffic controllers is approximately $130,000, with experienced controllers at major facilities earning over $180,000. The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects steady demand as a wave of current controllers reaches the mandatory retirement age of 56.
Education Requirements
The FAA hires controllers through two pathways:
FAA Air Traffic Collegiate Training Initiative (AT-CTI) — 36 accredited programs at colleges nationwide. Graduates qualify for accelerated hiring.
Off-the-street hiring — Open to applicants with either a bachelor’s degree in any field, three years of progressively responsible work experience, or a combination of education and experience totaling three years.
Hiring Process
Submit an application during open FAA hiring windows. Take the Air Traffic Skills Assessment (ATSA) exam. If you pass, you’ll be placed on a candidate register. Successful candidates receive a tentative offer and must pass a medical exam, security clearance, and background check. Training begins at the FAA Academy in Oklahoma City.
Career Progression
Controllers start at FAA Academy training, then move to a facility for on-the-job training. Certification at a facility typically takes 2–4 years. Controllers can transfer between facilities or advance to supervisory roles. The retirement age of 56 ensures steady turnover and advancement opportunities.
